Do you need a Lactation Consultation?

Is your baby not latching on easily and comfortably? Do you have any nipple damage or persistent breast pain? Is your baby wetting 5-6 diapers and having 2-5 stools per day (after the 4th day of life)? Is your baby too sleepy to eat? Is your baby always fussy or difficult to console? Do you feel like your baby wants to feed ALL THE TIME? Have you had any type of breast surgery and wonder if it will affect your ability to breastfeed? Did you have problems breastfeeding your last baby and want to get off to a better start this time? Are you adopting a baby and desire to breastfeed him/her? Have you been given advice that you question?

At Tidewater Lactation, our compassionate Lactation Consultant professionals are here to provide you with the best care for you and your child. Here are the products and services we offer.

Office Visits, 1 hour, $125

  • Measuring and recording weight and a thorough maternal and infant history (prenatal, birth and feeding).
  • Evaluation of infant oral anatomy and mother’s breasts.
  • Observation and assessment of a feeding, milk expression, baby’s feeding cues and response to feeding, ability to transfer milk, and pre- and post-feeding weights to measure volume of milk intake at the breast (BabyWeigh gram scale is used for accuracy).
  • Documentation of the findings and plan agreed upon by both mother and consultant are written and the report sent to your care providers.

Add $25 for additional time needed

Add $25 for an Office Consultation after hours/weekends (if available)

Follow Up Consultation, $50-$100

One-on-one visit for established clients with continued breastfeeding difficulties or concerns. Many problems can be solved with one visit, however more challenging problems may require more than one visit. Also new problems, such as a return to work, milk supply issues, introduction of solids and weaning may develop at a later time and require a follow-up visit. Charges depend on complexity and length of visit.

IBCLC Office Appointment

Your office consultation will generally take about an hour to complete. By the end of the visit, you will have practiced the techniques shown to you by your consultant, based on your breastfeeding concerns.

Home Visit, up to 2 hours, $200

Add $25 for a Home Visit more than 15 miles from the office.

Extended Visits (longer than 2 hours) can incur an additional charge

IBCLC Home Visit

Make an appointment for us to come to you! A home visit generally takes about 1 to 2 hours to complete. By the end of the visit, you will have practiced the techniques shown to you by your consultant, based on your breastfeeding concerns. We can also come to your doctor’s office or Hospital!

Breastfeeding, Getting off to a Healthy Start, $25

This introductory class is 2 hours in length and designed for parents in their middle or last trimester. We cover all of your questions about breastfeeding, and managing the first days and weeks after delivery. We will focus on position and latch with videos and you can bring a doll for hands-on practice. You’ll see examples of gadgets and gizmos and get an honest opinion on what’s “nice to have” vs what’s necessary. Your support person is welcome and recommended!

This class is offered on the 3rd Saturday of every month from 10:00 am -12:00 pm in our Virginia Beach office.

A 1 hour private class can be scheduled for a $100 fee.

Bra Fittings, Free

Let us help you find the perfect fitting bra. Come into the office and we can measure your proper size and you can then try on different styles in both bras and tanks. Recommended for 38 weeks gestation or later as your size will continue to grow. This service is free of charge and by appointment only.

Weight Checks, Free

If you are concerned about what your baby is transferring at the breast, you can come into the office to use our Babyweigh scale. This is not a consultation with a Lactation Consultant. This service is free of charge and by appointment only.

Crematocrit Testing, $25

Curious about how many calories are in your milk? Are you being asked to supplement? We us a portable centrifuge designed to measure the caloric and fat content of breast milk. Have your milk tested in the office in just minutes for calories and fat. Fee for testing is $25.00 and by appointment only. Discounted when combined with a consultation.
